About Her Brother 2010
Plot Synopsis
Otouto (original Japanese title, literal translation: "Younger Brother") tells the story of a never-do-well younger brother and his generous, open-hearted elder sister. The brother is the type who can never stay still and loves fooling around admiring the comedians and entertainers of Osaka, while the sister is strait-laced and lives in Tokyo. There is a reason the sister does not discard her younger brother: the death of her husband has left her despondent, and it is his bright cheer that saves her and sets her back on her feet. For her he can do nothing wrong, and since she is always on his side, she is his port in any storm. But an incident occurs which makes her break relations with him, sending him into deep despai Long time pass. When they finally reunite, the sister discovers that the brother is terminally ill. All is forgiven at this point. As she nurses him, he is able to face death with calm resolution. Nursing her brother through his last days, she again finds it in herself to accept him for what he is, and rediscovers her lost sense of generous toleration. For the two of them, his death is a new beginning, rather than an end. A good death meaning, as they say, a good life, the unflinching way in which they approach this death validates both their lives. The film show how it is possible for people to reinvent themselves, and is thus becomes a tale of reclamation...
